How to build a crypto watchlist
A short list with roles and alerts beats a 200-coin noise feed. Free live kit + CSV at the end. Educational only — not trading advice.
The rule
Watchlist size ≤ 15 (start 8–12)
Each row = symbol + role + thesis + one alert
Weekly prune = remove dead theses before adding new ones
If you cannot name the role and the alert, it is not a watch item — it is FOMO storage.
Step-by-step
- Cap the list — 8–15 max. More is a timeline, not a decision surface.
- Liquid first — deepest books on your venue (often BTC, ETH, SOL majors) before thin microcaps.
- Role every symbol — core / satellite / event-driven / research-only. No role = no slot.
- One alert rule — % move, level, or funding extreme. One primary. Secondary optional.
- One-line thesis — why it earns a slot this week. Dated if event-driven.
- Size intent (optional) — max notion or % of book. Prevents “watch” turning into accidental concentration.
- Weekly prune — drop dead theses before adds. Adds only on open slots.
Worked mini-list (example layout)
BTC · core · macro beta · alert: daily close ±4%
ETH · core · L2 / risk-on beta · alert: vs BTC strength flip
SOL · satellite · ecosystem beta · alert: −12% from 7d high
EVENT · event · known date only · alert: 24h pre-event liquidity check
Educational layout only. Not a recommendation to buy or sell anything.
Common mistakes
- Listing every narrative coin with no prune rule
- Price column only — no role, thesis, or alert
- Illiquid names you cannot exit without moving the book
- Copying influencer lists without your own thesis line
- Alerts on everything → alert blindness (zero action)
- Treating a watchlist as a portfolio (they are different tools)
What to do next
- Empty list — start with 3 majors + 2 satellites max
- Overflow (>15) — force rank by conviction; cut bottom third today
- No alerts firing — rules too wide; tighten to moves you would actually act on
- All alerts firing — noise; raise thresholds or cut symbols
FAQ
How many coins on a watchlist?
8–15 is a practical band for active use. Larger lists become feeds you ignore.
Watchlist vs portfolio?
A watchlist is decision input (what you monitor). A portfolio is capital at risk. Mixing them hides concentration and bias.
What fields matter most?
Symbol, role, one-line thesis, one alert rule. Everything else is optional until those four are honest.
Where is the free tool?
HaloLabz free live watchlist kit — public spot prices, CSV + sample spreadsheet. No account.
